McGillicuddy's On The Green, Colchester, VT If you would like to order lunch, please arrive by 11:30 AM. The meeting 'officially' starts at noon. Born and raised in New Hampshire, our guest speaker took a rather unconventional path to brewing beer and owning a brewery. He began his career as a kindergarten teacher in Brooklyn, New York, where he met his wife, who was teaching second grade at the same school. The couple eventually decided to pursue international teaching opportunities, which took them to Vienna, Austria. There, he taught kindergarten and first grade, while his wife continued teaching second grade. During their time in Europe, he developed a fascination with the region's rich brewing culture, particularly the careful craftsmanship, centuries-old traditions, and unique combination of art and science involved in brewing beer. Upon returning to the United States, he decided to turn that fascination into a career. In 2015, he joined Magic Hat Brewing Company, starting on the second shift filling kegs. He eventually worked his way up to Lead Brewer, overseeing fermentation and wort production, a role he admits wasn't nearly as fancy as it sounds. In 2020, he took the leap and founded Lucy and Howe Brewing Company. Unfortunately, his timing coincided with the arrival of COVID-19. Despite the challenges of launching a brewery during a global pandemic, hard work and loyal customers helped make the venture a success. In 2022, Lucy and Howe Brewing Company moved into the historic Jericho General Store building, sharing the space with Brew House Coffee Company. Today, the brewery produces and packages its own beer while offering food, full pours, and occasional events. His journey from teaching kindergarten to brewing craft beer proves that sometimes the best career paths are the ones you never planned. And while his students may have changed, he's still helping people learn to appreciate something new, one pint at a time! |
